Skill Development Drill: Rim Shot Control and Application
Aims and Objectives
- To develop player’s ability to execute a controlled rim shot
- Build confidence in moving the ball against the side wall under control
- Develop correct bat angle, grip and table contact for an efficient rim shot
- Improve directional control so the ball travels full length of side wall
- Introduce tactical understanding of when and why to use a rim shot in match play
Equipment and Set-up
- Showdown table
- Ball
- Player equipment (bat, glove, eye shades)
Demonstration and Description
Coach or experienced player demonstrates slowly:
- Ball trapped against the side wall using a soft angled bat,
- Rotate the bat angle so that it is now behind the ball in an upright position
- Strike forward so the ball stays in contact with the wall
- Emphasise the smooth continuous motion rather than a hit-and stop action
Players feel the bat angle: Let players physically explore the correct bat angle and table contact using hand over hand guidance if appropriate.
Shadow reps: Players practice the motion without the ball to feel the angle and movement path.
Drill Progression
Step 1: Static start
- Player begins with the ball placed against the side wall on the glove side (Right-handed players right wall)
- Player adjusts the grip and bat angle, so the bat is in the correct position to perform the shot
- Player strikes the ball, so it moves down the table in contact with the side wall.
- Reset and repeat 10-15 times
Step 2: Push out into position
- Player starts with the ball against their bat at the 3 o’clock position, from there they will push the ball out to trap it against the side wall
- Player with control moves the ball out of the curve and into the ideal position to perform the rim shot
- Player executes the rim shot with a focus on smoothness
- Reset and repeat 5-10 times
Step 3: Switch
- Repeat step 2 but switch to the opposite side wall
- Reset and repeat 10-15 times
Coaching Points
Technical
- Maintain a consistent angle
- Keep the wrist relaxed to allow smooth contact
- Use a forward glide not a jab
Physical
- Encourage stable stance with slight knee flexion
- Shoulders square
- Smooth weight transfer forward
Athlete Reflection Prompts
- What did you notice about the bat angle when the ball stayed on the wall?
- What feedback did the sound of the ball give you?
- How could you use the shot tactically?
Coaches Reflection Notes
- Was the demonstration and explanation easy to understand and follow?
- Were players able to maintain the correct bat angle without constant prompting?
- Which technical errors appeared most frequently, and what does that tell me about how I introduced the skill?
- Did all players regardless of ability have meaningful challenge and a sense of success?
- Did any player appear to be lost, frustrated or under challenged?
- By the end of the drill could most players execute the skill?
- Did the drill feel like it genuinely improved a match relevant skill?
- What would I change next time to make the learning even more effective?
