The aim of the game is to hit the ball off the side walls, along the table, under the centreboard and into your opponents goal. The first player to reach eleven points and leading by at least 2 points is the winner. A player may score points regardless of which player is serving.
Goal
A goal is scored when the ball fully enters the goal pocket. During the game when a goal is scored the referee will blow a double whistle and call “goal” and two points will be awarded to the player who scored.
Infractions
Points can also be awarded following different infractions or faults. When an infraction or fault occurs the referee will blow a single whistle and call the playing mistake, and one point will be awarded to the opponent of the player who commits the infraction.
The different calls a referee will make following different infractions will include:
- Irregular Serve – The most common irregular serves are either long serves, this is when the serve does not bounce off the side wall on the servers end of the table before passing under the centreboard. Short serves are when the ball bounces off the side wall more than once on the servers side of the table before passing under the centreboard.
- Centreboard – This infraction occurs if a player hits the ball into the centreboard screen and stops the balls forward motion or if the ball passes over the centreboard screen.
- Body Touch – If a player touches the ball with any part of the body, other than the bat or batting hand within the playing area.
- Illegal Defence – No contact is allowed within the goal area with the ball. If the ball touches within the goal area the bat or batting hand then the fault is called.
- Out – When the player hits the ball with the bat or batting hand and it causes the ball to leave the playing area of the table. Also if the player hits the ball and it touches the top of the contact board.
- Invasion – If the player holds the non-playing hand in the inner playing area. If the player grips the contact board with the non-batting hand.
- Bat – If the player does not hold the bat in one hand, except when switching hands, or if the player drops the bat.
- Ball – If the player traps or stops the ball for more than two seconds, so that the ball is inaudible for the opponent.
